Technical Compliance & Waste Management

Environmental Chemist and Waste Classification

We employ a full-time environmental chemist at our Trafford Park operation.

Our environmental chemist supports the assessment and classification of waste streams where the composition or regulatory status is unclear.

Depending on the material, this can include:

  • reviewing process information and safety data sheets;
  • assessing unknown, mixed or unlabelled waste;
  • arranging or carrying out appropriate testing;
  • assessing waste against WM3 guidance;
  • identifying relevant hazard properties;
  • assigning the appropriate European Waste Catalogue code;
  • assessing chemical compatibility;
  • determining suitable packaging requirements; and
  • helping establish an appropriate recovery, treatment or disposal route.

Where further classification is required, this technical assessment takes place before we confirm the collection route.

This is particularly useful for businesses holding legacy chemicals, mixed waste, unidentified drums or unusual production residues where the material needs to be properly identified before it can be moved.

Hazardous Waste Classification

Hazardous waste must be correctly identified and classified before it is moved.

We use available production information, safety data, laboratory information and technical assessment to determine the appropriate classification and management route.

Where required, our environmental chemist assesses a waste stream against WM3 guidance and assigns the appropriate waste code before collection.

This can be particularly important for:

  • unknown chemicals;
  • mixed production waste;
  • laboratory chemicals;
  • industrial sludge and slurry;
  • solvents;
  • acids and alkalis;
  • off-specification products;
  • contaminated packaging; and
  • waste that has previously been refused by another collector or receiving facility.

Correct classification helps ensure that the waste code, hazard properties, packaging, transport requirements and receiving facility all match the material being moved.

Waste Documentation and Audit Trail

We provide or support the documentation required for the waste streams we manage.

Depending on the material and movement, this can include:

  • hazardous waste consignment notes;
  • waste transfer notes;
  • waste carrier information;
  • EWC codes;
  • weighbridge tickets;
  • receiving-site information; and
  • records supporting the classification and onward route.

Hazardous waste collections are accompanied by documentation that matches the classification of the material being transported.

For managed industrial waste services, we can also provide classification information, EWC coding, segregation information, collection arrangements and consolidated reporting.

This helps our customers maintain a clear record of where their waste has gone and supports their continuing duty of care.

For more information, see our Waste Documentation & Duty of Care guide.

ADR-Compliant Hazardous Waste Transport

We use ADR-compliant transport for hazardous waste collections where ADR requirements apply.

These requirements can affect:

  • packaging;
  • vehicle requirements;
  • labelling and marking;
  • documentation;
  • segregation and compatibility; and
  • driver and crew competence.

We assess the waste before movement so that the transport and packaging arrangements can be matched to the material being collected.

Where required, hazardous chemicals and small-pack laboratory waste can be packed into suitable UN-approved packaging before transport.
